A Pakistani court sentenced four men to death for blasphemy after they were accused of publishing sacrilegious material online about Islamic figures and the Quran. Their lawyer says appeals are being prepared. Under Pakistan's blasphemy law, anyone convicted of insulting Islam or its figures can be sentenced to death. While authorities have not yet carried out any of these sentences, blasphemy accusations and opposition to the law can incite violence from mobs or reprisals. The lawyer criticized the court's decision and the lack of evidence from investigators, saying that courts often ignore doubts and uncertainties in these cases due to fear of religious backlash and potential mob violence against the judge if the accused is acquitted.
