A series of deadly aviation accidents has shaken the United States, claiming the lives of 85 people in just 12 days. The incidents, involving both commercial and private aircraft, have raised concerns about aviation safety. The NTSB is investigating each case thoroughly, with preliminary reports expected within 30 days.
In a span of 12 days, beginning on January 29, 2025, a total of 85 fatalities have resulted from four significant aviation incidents across the United States. This marks the first series of deadly air accidents involving U.S. aircraft since 2009. The National Transportation Safety Board ( NTSB ) anticipates releasing preliminary reports within 30 days following each incident. These initial reports will encompass factual data gathered during the early stages of the investigation.
The final reports, which will delve into the probable cause of each crash and any contributing factors, are projected to be issued 12 to 24 months after the respective accidents. One of the most devastating incidents occurred in Washington, D.C., where a Bombardier CRJ700 operating as American Airlines Flight 5342 collided with a Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter above the Potomac River. This tragic accident resulted in the loss of all 64 passengers and crew aboard the CRJ700 and three individuals on the helicopter.Another incident unfolded in Philadelphia, where a Learjet, en route from a nearby small airport, crashed into a residential area shortly after takeoff. The impact generated a massive fireball, claiming the lives of seven people. In Alaska, a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, designated as Bering Air Flight 445, vanished en route from Unalakleet to Nome, 10 minutes prior to its scheduled arrival in Nome. The aircraft's wreckage was later discovered in the Bering Sea, 34 miles from Nome, with all 10 occupants onboard perished. A fourth incident took place at Scottsdale Airport in Arizona, where a plane veered off the runway and collided with a stationary aircraft. This accident resulted in one fatality and four injuries.
