Janji was founded in 2012 by former Washington University in St. Louis runners David Spandorfer and Michael Burnstein. They wanted to create a running apparel company that would give back, and came up with the name Janji, which means “promise” in Malay. The company typically designs gear based on regional styles and colors in places like Ethiopia and Bolivia, then donates profits back to organizations in each country that provide clean water.
But for its latest collection, Spandorfer and Burnstein wanted a smaller, more personal connection with the design process. They collaborated with a Mexio City-based running collective calledEach piece is inspired by an item important to the region.
