Four Enterprise girls wrestlers reach semifinals; Dothan's Robinson, NMA's Tan lose openers

DAVID MUNDEE The goal for four Enterprise girls wrestlers to repeat as a state champion remains intact following the opening day of the AHSAA Class 6A-7A State Championships in Huntsville. Among the four is Evelyn Holmes-Smith, who is bidding for a fifth straight state title, though this year’s title would be the first in an AHSAA sanctioned state championships.

The previous four state meets were not officially sanctioned by the AHSAA. Holmes-Smith, competing in the 138-pound weight class, won a quarterfinal match Thursday over Mae Jemison’s Amaya Smith on a fall in the first period . Holmes-Smith faces Baldwin County’s Jamie Vinson in the semifinals. The winner faces the winner of Sparkman’s Jessica Cook and Thompson’s Aenaya Vines in Saturday’s championship final. People are also reading… The other three EHS wrestlers still with a shot at a repeat state title are Taimane Benemerito, Mackenzie Schultz and Mallory Ladd. All advanced to Friday’s semifinals with Thursday wins. Benemerito eked out a 4-3 win over Grissom’s Fracia Reza in the quarterfinals of the 132-pound weight class. The Enterprise junior faces Daphne’s Kimber Alford in Friday’s semifinals. The winner advances to the finals against the winner of Buckhorn’s Bianca Hart and Gulf Shores’ Leah Guthrie on Saturday. Schultz, a junior, earned a first-period pin in 43 seconds over Sparkman’s Makiya McRae in a 152-pound weight class quarterfinal match on Thursday. Schultz faces Brookwood’s Haley Pate in the semifinals Friday. The winner faces Thompson’s Talita Vas or Tuscaloosa County’s Maddie Taylor in Saturday’s finals. Ladd, a senior who remains unbeaten at 33-0 on the year, pinned Columbia’s Alaya Spence in 59 seconds to advance to the 185-pound weight class semifinals. She faces Benjamin Russell’s Brooklyn Cottingham in the semifinals. The winner moves to Saturday’s finals against the winner of Thompson’s Ava Nguyen and Central-Phenix City’s Hannah McDuffie . Enterprise has one other wrestler competing at the state meet – Israel Hart in the 235-pound weight class. Hart lost her quarterfinal match to Robertsdale’s Bentley Betts on a first-period fall and competes in Friday’s consolation bracket. Following the opening day of competition, Enterprise was in third place in the team standings with 14 points. Daphne and Thompson shared the lead with 28 points. Central-Phenix City with 12 points was in fourth place.Dothan’s Teegan Robinson and Northside Methodist Academy’s Shanue Tan both lost quarterfinal matches on Thursday and were set to compete in the consolation bracket on Friday. Robinson, a sophomore wrestling in the Class 6A-7A 165-pound weight class, lost to Mortimer Jordan’s Savannah Bowie on a first-period fall . Tan, a sophomore competing in the Class 1A-5A 126-pound weight class, lost to East Limestone’s Hannah Mayo on a first-period fall .
