Protesters occupy Premier’s office, police operation underway
Police arrested four people after a group of anti-coal and gas protesters occupied Premier Dominic Perrottet’s Epping electorate office on Friday morning.
About 15 protesters from climate action group Rising Tide Australia, carrying signs and banners accusing the premier of committing a “climate fail” for allowing new coal and gas projects, arrived at the foyer of the office at 10.15am, before occupying his main electoral office for 45 minutes.Police were called soon after and moved the group on. But four protesters who refused to leave – two men, aged 62 and 64, and two women, aged 40 and 65 – were arrested and charged with trespass.
15-year-old Chris Black, who had taken the day off school for the event, said in the video he was there to teach the premier about the climate crisis. “Obviously we’re having crazy weather,” he said. “It’s not the rapture. It’s the climate crisis”, he said, referencing the premier’s Catholic faith.A NSW Police spokesperson said its officers had responded to “reports of an unauthorised protest involving 15 people at an office complex in Rawson Street, Epping” and arrested four people who refused to leave when directed.“All four were taken to Ryde Police Station and are currently assisting with inquiries,” they said.
