The Blayne Hardy Barfield Foundation, established after Blayne Barfield's suicide due to postpartum depression, continues its work in Dothan, Alabama. The foundation raises funds and awareness to support mental health initiatives, reduce stigma, and honor Blayne's memory through events like the Egg My Yard fundraiser, with the participation of Blayne's daughter. The foundation advocates for seeking help and provides support to area schools and programs.
DOTHAN, Ala. - In 2015, the Hardy and Barfield families’ lives changed forever when they lost Blayne Barfield to suicide after she silently fought postpartum depression . Three years after her death, the Blayne Hardy Barfield Foundation was born to help others dealing with mental health problems and the stigma surrounding it.
Pam Hardy, Blayne’s mother, described her daughter as a private person, which she says was one of the reasons she didn’t realize how much Blayne was struggling. She now advocates that people reach out for help when they’re going through a difficult time and reminds them they’re not alone. “If you can’t find the help you need locally, wherever you are, I’m not just speaking of Dothan, go out of town,” Hardy said. Each year, the group holds fundraisers to shine a light on their cause and raise money for organizations and businesses that support people dealing with situations similar to Blayne’s. “We’ve done two different types over the years, since 2019 we’ve been doing the Egg My Yard event, where we go and egg people’s yards the night before Easter,” Barfield said. “We get friends involved and kids involved. Last year we visited 140 houses, approximately, and delivered over 6,000 eggs.” Lilly, Blayne and Justin’s daughter, was only three years old when her mother passed away. Now, at 13, she is heavily involved with the foundation and is proud to give the money they raise to area schools, programs, and counselors. The family and friends involved in the foundation plan to continue Blayne’s legacy and serve as advocates for others for many years to come.
