NBC's Found season 2 explores themes of rehabilitation and redemption, but its attempt to redeem Ethan feels unearned. Ethan's resentment towards Gabi and his controlling behavior towards Dhan raise serious concerns about his character.
NBC 's Found has been exploring themes of rehabilitation and redemption in its sophomore season. Series protagonist Gabi Mosely (Shanola Hampton) is grappling with the repercussions of imprisoning her kidnapper and stalker, Hugh 'Sir' Evans (Mark Paul Gossellar). Her found family at Mosely & Associates is confronting the reality that the woman they revered as their savior is flawed, angry, and capable of terrible things.
Found even delves into questions surrounding Sir's capacity for good, with the in-universe public debating whether his act of saving a young girl earlier in the season signifies hidden goodness. While undeniably, a serial stalker and kidnapper like Sir is largely irredeemable, Found attempts to build towards the redemption of one of its supporting characters that feels unearned. The series wants to redeem the character of Ethan (Lee Osorio), but it shouldn't. Ethan, as Dhan's (Karan Oberoi) husband, exists peripherally within Mosely & Associates. Season 1 portrayed Ethan and Gabi's dynamic as warm, but with Season 2 revealing Gabi's year-long captivity of Sir, things have shifted dramatically. However, Ethan isn't actually angry at Gabi for involving his husband in her abduction of Sir. His resentment stems from the lengths Dhan will go for Gabi and the fact that he was the last to know about Dhan's involvement, not the first. Ethan harbors bitterness towards Gabi because he perceives Dhan's view of her as his 'savior.' Crucially, it's not Gabi's fault that M&A places her on this pedestal, and it's evident she played a role in Dhan's recovery after his abduction. Ethan's resentment towards her is misplaced at best, and downright bitter and cruel at worst. Season 2 sees Gabi struggling to cope with Sir's escape, his second abduction of her found sister Lacey Quinn (Gabrielle Walsh), Sir's persistent taunting of her friends, and the relentless stream of cases she never turns down. Gabi Mosely is going through an incredibly difficult time, and Ethan's response has been to seize every opportunity to be spiteful towards her due to failings in his own marriage. He makes snide remarks when dropping off Dhan's lunch and even dismisses her from the hospital when Dhan gets shot, disregarding Dhan's desire for her presence. Notably, Ethan only offers a half-hearted apology to Gabi when he needs her to investigate a case he's personally invested in. Even while she's doing him a favor, Ethan continues to jab at her about not being forthcoming with information. His behavior resembles that of a scorned lover caught in a love triangle with his husband's mistress, except Dhan is a gay man and Gabi is a woman. There is no competition; Ethan simply resents anyone his husband relies upon as much as or more than him – and that's not just problematic, it's a major red flag.
