Epic Games settled with the FTC over allegations that it used 'dark patterns' to trick players into unwanted purchases.
The Federal Trade Commission has started distributing refunds totaling more than $72 million to players impacted by Fortnite's billing practices.This refund follows a $245-million settlement with Fortnite developer Epic Games, announced in December 2022, over allegations that the game maker used 'dark patterns' to trick players into unwanted purchases.
'In a statement to Newsweek, FTC spokesperson Juliana Gruenwald Henderson said that this was just the first round of payments, 'additional money will be distributed later. People can still submit a claim if they haven't done so already through January 10,' she said.Newsweek has contacted Epic Games via social media for comment.Refunds are being sent to 629,344 claimants in the form of PayPal payments or checks, with the average payout approximately $114.
