Fort Worth Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald answers questions during a news conference alongside then-Mayor Betsy Price on September 16, 2016.The Fort Worth City Council on Tuesday approved $9.6 million to settle three whistleblower lawsuits filed against the city by former employees, including formers, was passed unanimously by the council. The settlements came after a lawsuit filed by former employee Ronald Burke went to trial in April and resulted in a jury siding with Burke and awarding him $2.
During the public comment period, several people spoke regarding the settlement. Fort Worth resident Lee Spieckerman called Fitzgerald’s firing “egregious” and said the city engaged in character assassination.“City Hall’s mission statement is ‘Fort Worth will be the most livable and the best managed city in the country,’” Spieckerman said “Ours may well be the most livable, but the sloppily executed railroading of our first Black police chief certainly proves it hasn’t been the best managed.
“I’m grateful that we was able to get to a settlement as we can move forward with the city of Fort Worth and make sure that we support all our employees,” Nettles said. “So I just want to thank the City Council for moving in this direction, and glad that we are able to get this settlement off tonight.”
