A call for a weekend march in Paris against anti-Semitism sparked bitter squabbling between political parties Wednesday despite a surge in anti-Semitic incidents in the country.
Michelle Mann FORT NOVOSEL -- “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others,” said Maj. Gen. Michael McCurry at the Veterans Day Ceremony on Fort Novosel Thursday. “And we are here today to honor those who have done just that.”
In 1954, Congress, at the urging of veterans service organizations, changed the day to honor American veterans of all wars. “Alabama’s rich heritage of service to our nation is a proud one and includes some of the most decorated soldiers in history, many from our own aviation branch,” McCurry said. “What some people may not know about this holiday is that one of the primary people responsible for it was a World War II veteran, Raymond Weeks of Birmingham.
McCurry also thanked the family members of veterans. “We know we couldn’t do what we do every day without your love and faithful support,” he said. “Our veterans include all the people who at some point raised their right hand and swore to defend the constitution and all it stands for,” McCurry said. “Time and again when the nation called, those who raised their right hand said, ‘Send me.’
