Australia will acquire more than 200 long-range missiles as part of a major weapons package as the government emphasises how the AUKUS agreement will help deter China's growing military presence in the region.
Defence Minister Richard Marles and Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy will announce the historic arms deal with the United States on Monday.
More than 60 Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile – Extended Range missiles will also feature in the package at an estimated cost of $431 million. One of the key messages in the major Defence Strategic Review – unveiled in April – was the need for Australia to rapidly invest in deterrence measures and develop the military’s capabilities to strike targets at longer range.
“We are investing in the capabilities our Defence Force needs to hold our adversaries at risk further from our shores and keep Australians safe in the complex and uncertain world in which we live today.
