Aroldis Chapman, formerly a dominant reliever for the New York Yankees, is making a bold shift to a starting pitching role with the New York Mets. Chapman, 32, has expressed his desire to embrace the challenge and showcase his versatility on the mound.

When Holmes’s image appeared on the screen during his introductory Zoom conference, he sported a nicely manicured beard — a no-no with the Mets on Dec. 16. The intention is for the right-hander who’ll be 32 years old at the start of the season to convert from a reliever to a starter. “I think it’s something that’s always been there for me.

It’s something that I think, at the end of the end of the day, was like, if this opportunity is here, I didn’t want to look back on my career and say, ‘Man, what could have come from that?’Since coming over from Pittsburgh via trade in July of 2021, the right-hander transformed from a pitcher with a 5.57 ERA Holmes to one with a 2.69 ERA over 220 outings with the Yankees. Holmes was an elite reliever when it came to keeping the ball on the ground. The right-hander’s 67.8% ground-ball rate with the Yankees is the best among all qualified relievers from the day Holmes made his Yankee debut until the end of this past season. With the Mets, Holmes plans to introduce two pitches to his arsenal. Along with his sinker, slider and sweeper, he’ll add a four-seamer and a changeup to give batters a different look the second and third time through an order. Holmes intends to join a shortlist of successful relievers-turned-starters, like former Mets right-hander Seth Lugo and his former teammate Michael Kin
