The pavilion — and its Wall of Hands — was designed to be a permanent structure. At one time, it was going to be transformed into a student center for UTSA.

Second of two columns Last Sunday we looked at the origins of the Woman’s Pavilion at HemisFair ’68, the world’s fair held April 6-Oct. 3, 1968, in the former downtown neighborhood that has been known since as Hemisfair Plaza, then HemisFair Park, and now is being redeveloped as Hemisfair .

San Antonio women tackled hurdles in quest to ensure representation at HemisFair ’68 One of the most substantial donations from a local women’s group was a $10,000 contribution from the Junior League of San Antonio, as reported in the League’s 1968-69 yearbook. The organization also took on the responsibility “to obtain and train 200 volunteers to work as guides for four hours once a week at our Pavilion.

HemisFair house was UTSA’s first home “Unfortunately, the regents of UT decided to place the new university 16 miles out of town to the north, creating urban sprawl and causing the HemisFair site to languish in neglect, ” said Wagner, now an author and urban designer. In 1972, UTSA’s provisional headquarters moved to the Koger Executive Center at Northwest Loop 410 off Babcock Road, closer to the planned campus.

Carnival rides, despite being trashed by Tower, outlasted HemisFair ’68 On Oct. 19, 1971, Winifred Hamlin, president of the group that built the pavilion, turned its keys over to Dr. Bernard Bloom, president of the Health Education Center. For a few years, the center offered programs of particular interest to women, such as a course based on the book “Our Bodies, Ourselves,” another on male-female relationships and a “Pro-life Seminar on Abortion.

S.A. women made their mark with HemisFair ’68’s Woman’s Pavilion The original “tile and imprints of the hands that helped build the pavilion are well-protected, as is the structure, and should survive any reuse of the building,” said Andres Andujar, CEO of Hemisfair Park Area Redevelopment Corp.
