Opening day for the Utah Talons marked a new era of women's sports in Salt Lake City. It's the second season of the Athletes Unlimited Softball League , but the first with a team permanently calling Utah home.
"I'm excited for us to have a home crowd and to feel like they are ours and we are theirs," she said. Flippen knows what a home crowd at Dumke Family Softball Stadium feels like. The infielder was a two-time Pac-12 Player of the Year at Utah from 2014-2017.
"It's really special," she said. "This is my second home. It feels very comfortable out there. I'm excited to bring more people into my home with the Utah Talons being here.
" Flippen helped lead the Talons to a championship in the AUSL's inaugural season. Utah's season opener was a rematch against the Chicago Bandits, which the Talons won 5-2. Infielder Bri Ellis had a career day with a home run, double and three RBI, while pitcher Montana Fouts pitched a complete game.
"This game is fast and it's fun to watch," Flippen said. "You get to really see our personalities when we play. You get to see a lot of excitement and celebrations. You get to see us as players and us as humans out there.
I think that's why people love it so much, and I think that's why we're going to gain a whole new fan base this season.
""We have a lot of workers in our locker room," she said. "Just a lot of players who want to work hard and want to play hard. We're gritty. I don't think we have the superstar team that makes it look lazy and cool.
We work hard, and I think that's what we're all about.
" First-year Head Coach Cindy Ball-Malone said there's no one who embodies this team more than Flippen. "What better person than Hannah Flippen to lead the way for us," Ball-Malone said. "She's like the ultimate playground kid. She can play this game at a very, very high level.
Yet, you can see the passion and the joy as if she was nine years old.
" Ball-Malone said she hopes fans watching the Talons share that same passion and even start some new traditions. "We're the Utah Talons, but we caw so we're the 'U-caw' Talons," she said. "Our team said they wanted to represent that. The other thing too is we want to have a tradition when we have two strikes on a batter on defense, we want to hear the 'caw, caw, caw'.
Then when we strike them out, it's a big, long 'cawwwww'. Someone's gotta lead the way in these stands.
"There's still plenty of time to get those traditions down. The Talons continue their series with the Bandits Wednesday and Thursday.
