Jimmy Carter, the oldest living US president, passed away at his home in Plains, Georgia, at the age of 98.
Jimmy Carter, the oldest living U.S. president of all time, has died according to his son at his home in Plains, Georgia. Carter was elected president in 1976 as the 39th president. After his single-term presidency, he went on to win a Nobel Peace Prize for his diplomacy work through The Carter Center . His son, James E. Carter III, also known as Chip, did not provide a cause of death. Carter entered home hospice care in February 2023 after a series of hospital stays.
Most recently, he has been treated for skin cancer as well as tumors that spread to both his liver and his brain. Rosalynn Carter, his wife, died Nov. 19, 2023. They were married for more than 77 years - with his final public appearance being her funeral.A moderate Democrat, Carter entered the 1976 presidential race as a little-known Georgia governor with a broad smile, outspoken Baptist mores, and technocratic plans reflecting his education as an engineer. His no-frills campaign depended on public financing, and his promise not to deceive the American people resonated after Richard Nixon’s disgrace and U.S. defeat in southeast Asia. “If I ever lie to you, if I ever make a misleading statement, don’t vote for me.
