ELMORE COUNTY, Ala. - A Correctional Officer at Julia Tutwiler Prison has resigned after being charged with using an official position for personal gain.
According to court documents, in November of 2023, Watkins reported that she had received $1,000 via Apple Pay from a phone number earlier in the month. Watkins stated that she had been approached by an inmate and asked on several occasions to bring in a bag of various drugs. Watkins claimed she told the inmate no but failed to report the interaction to her supervisors.
When investigators questioned the inmate, court documents say she stated she paid Watkins over $2,000 on separate occasions for various prison contraband items. However, no contraband was left to be turned over for the investigation. The inmate also provided her personal notes, which contained personal information associated with Watkins, and stated a date and time that were said to be proof of a meeting with Watkins.
