The former music director at a prestigious north Queensland school lost his job and house but has avoided jail over 'depraved' messages.
: Former Townsville teacher Samuel Blanch pleaded guilty to four child exploitation material charges.
During a sentencing hearing on Monday, the Townsville District Court heard the 57-year-old made descriptions of sexual acts involving boys aged eight, 12 and 15 to another adult male over a chat line. Ms Moore said Blanch's job as a teacher was an aggravating factor, and she cast doubt on his statements to a psychiatrist that he had no sexual interest in children. However, defence counsel Rowan Pack asked that his client be fined and for convictions not to be recorded.
Mr Pack said his client had already suffered considerable punishment, having lost his career as a teacher.Mr Pack said Blanch had suffered considerable financial loss, going from earning about $150,000 a year at Townsville Grammar to about $30,000 a year in a casual retail job. In sentencing, Judge Suzanne Sheridan said the community had a "complete abhorrence" for crimes of that nature."I note the rather unusual nature of your offending," she said. She accepted that psychiatrist's findings that Blanch did not meet the criteria of having paedophilic disorder.
