Former University of Texas baseball coach Cliff Gustafson won two national titles with the Longhorns and seven high school state titles while coaching at South San.AUSTIN — Cliff Gustafson, the luminary baseball coach who won numerous championships at Texas and South San Antonio High School, died Monday morning from congestive heart failure. He was 91.
“Coach Gus” won 1,466 games at Texas before retiring in 1996, a Division I record that would later by surpassed by his successor, the late Augie Garrido, and a few others. Gustafson still holds the record for all-time winning percentage . During that legendary run he coached nine SWC Players of the Year, 35 first-team All-Americans, 12 second-team All-Americans and nine third-team All-Americans.
“One solid memory I carry in the back of my mind,” former Longhorn and seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens wrote on Twitter, “on my first visit to the University campus and in Coach Gus’ office he gave me a quick hand shake, and immediately said, ‘Do you want to be a Longhorn or not.’”
