“It was shocking,” Pete Van de Putte said during a phone interview late Monday night. “It’s just a difficult thing to go through.” On Sunday morning, several hours before the accident, Leticia went to Mass and bought a rosary from the church’s gift shop.Pete Van de Putte said he didn’t see the accident because he and his wife parted briefly to go to separate stores. Despite her injuries, Leticia was able to talk and gave a bystander her husband’s cellphone number.
“Evidently, he was in the middle of the turn and looked down ... and when he looked up, she was right there. And he hit her.”
