The FBI identified the shooter as 36-year-old Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, a former Virginia Army National Guard soldier who pleaded guilty in 2016 to attempting to aid the Islamic State extremist group, also known as ISIS. Dominique Evans, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Norfolk field office, said Jalloh shouted “Allahu Akbar” before opening fire in a classroom Thursday morning, Lt. Col. Brandon Shah was identified as the person killed in the shooting. He was an alumnus of the university and a decorated military veteran who served several tours in the Middle East. Shah enlisted in the Army in 2003 as an aviation operations specialist. Media outlets reported that the two people injured are members of the school’s Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.
