Mike Rinder, known for his criticism of Scientology after leaving the church, passed away due to esophageal cancer.

Mike Rinder , a former high-ranking spokesperson for the Church of Scientology who later became one of its most vocal critics, died on Sunday, January 5, in Palm Harbor, Florida, due to esophageal cancer . He was 69. Rinder, who once worked closely with Scientology leader David Miscavige, went on to win two Emmys for his work on the docuseries ' Leah Remini : Scientology and the Aftermath'. Rinder was born in Australia and raised as a Scientologist.

He joined the Sea Organization, an elite group that lived and traveled with Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, at a young age. While part of the church, Rinder married a fellow Sea Org member and had two children. He focused on climbing the ranks of Scientology, eventually leading the Office of Special Affairs, one of the church's most prominent spokesperson roles. He later wrote about how the job required him to smear critics of the church and work with high-profile members, including actor Tom Cruise. Rinder followed the Scientology tradition of 'fair game,' attacking anyone who spoke out against the church. Former Scientologist Karen de la Carriere described Rinder as a charming man with an Australian accent.
