He was led down the prison's corridors into D Wing to serve his time alongside a chilling rogues' gallery of some of Britain's most depraved child killers, rapists, and sex offenders. Officials set up the unit to accommodate the high-security prison's most vulnerable prisoners and those at the greatest risk of self-harm.
Varley has spent most of his time confined to his 24ft by 10ft single cell under a restrictive regime, venturing out just for meals and a short period of daily exercise. He has assumed a secret new identity and is now going under the name Harry Robb, following reports a bounty had been placed on his head. Sources say his arrival was low-key, but a number of inmates have already approached his cell.
Despite this, he has been made to feel at home by at least one fellow prisoner. Varley's partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, was sentenced to 25 years behind bars for his part in the crime. McGowan-Fazakerley was convicted of sexual assault, child cruelty, and allowing the death of a child.
Varley was transferred to Wakefield Prison at the end of June, where he was held in the healthcare unit for ten days for his own protection and to give him a 'soft launch' into the institution. He was then sent to the D Wing to serve his time alongside other prisoners. Varley's arrival has been met with a mix of fear and curiosity from the other inmates, with some approaching his cell to suss him out.
Despite this, he has been able to make some connections with other prisoners, including a fellow inmate from Liverpool. Varley's case is a shocking example of the twisted and depraved crimes that some individuals are capable of committing.
