Mike Vernon spent 19 seasons in the NHL, including parts of three seasons with the Sharks, helping guide the team to the playoffs twice.
Henrik Lundqvist is the headliner of the Hockey Hall of Fame’s goaltender-heavy class of 2023, which also includes Stanley Cup champions Tom Barrasso and former San Jose Shark Mike Vernon.
Selection committee chairman Mike Gartner announced the seven-person class Wednesday. Former NHL forward Pierre Turgeon and Canadian women’s hockey star Caroline Oullette were the other players, while Cup-winning coach Ken Hitchcock and late executive Pierre Lacroix were picked to be inducted in the builder category.
Vernon spent parts of three of his 19 seasons in the NHL with the Sharks, and helped lead the team to the playoffs in each of his first two seasons. He won more than 300 games in all, and was a two-time Stanley Cup winner . Vernon joined the Sharks in 1997-98 and, at the age of 34, won 30 games and helped the team return to the playoffs for the first time in three seasons. It was the start of a 16-season run that saw the franchise reach the playoffs 15 times.
The wait continues for point-a-game Russian winger AlexanderMogilny, goaltender Curtis Joseph, who is just five victories behind Lundqvist on the NHL career list, and Jeremy Roenick, who played the final two seasons of his 20-season NHL career with the Sharks. Roenick, who has been eligible since 2012, has the second most points and the fourth most goals among eligible players not in the Hall of Fame.
