Rear Adm. Yvette Davids, who became the first Hispanic woman to command a Navy warship in 2007 when she took over the San Diego-based frigate Curts, has been nominated to become the first woman to serve as superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.for the post last week by Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro and Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Michael M. Gilday. She also was nominated to become a vice admiral.
The 177-year-old Naval Academy trains men and women to become officers in the Navy and Marines. It’s alumni includes dozens of Medal of Honor recipients, more than 50 astronauts and former President Jimmy Carter.
She prized her time on the Curts, telling the Union-Tribune in 2013, “I was aboard a frigate and if I was ordered to do something, I could do it.”
