A memorial service for former San Antonio Mayor Howard W. Peak, known for establishing the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trails System, will take place Tuesday. Peak's legacy includes the development of the extensive trail network and his dedication to environmental conservation.

A memorial service for former San Antonio Mayor Howard W. Peak , who launched the network of walking and bicycling trails that bears his name, will be held Tuesday afternoon. Peak, who served as mayor from 1997-2001, died Nov. 30. He was 75. A celebration of life is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Betty Kelso Center at the San Antonio Botanical Garden, 555 Funston Place. One of his most enduring legacies is the Howard W.

Peak Greenway Trails System, a 100-mile network of accessible trails widely regarded as a jewel of San Antonio. Peak began laying the groundwork for it in the 1990s. As a member of the Zoning Commission and later as a city council member representing District 9 on the North Side, he began efforts to secure land in flood zones along Salado Creek, Leon Creek and the Medina River for public walking and biking paths. Beginning in 2000, San Antonio voters repeatedly approved the use of sales tax revenue to build and expand the system. The network now encompasses more than 50 main trailheads that connect to smaller paths and dozens of parks. It was named for Peak in 2013. City park officials envision a 180-mile system that, once fully funded and built, will complete Peak’s vision of an “emerald necklace” of paved trails along the environmentally sensitive creek basins that flow into the San Antonio River. Born in Tokyo in 1948, Peak graduated from Alamo Heights High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in history at the University of Texas at Austin, then a master’s in urban studies/environmental management at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He served in the Army, became a city planner and helped develop the Sonterra area. He served on the city council from 1993-1997. As mayor, Peak also led efforts to protect the Edwards Aquifer, the city’s primary source for drinking water, and helped create San Antonio’s first comprehensive water-management plan
