Henry Cisneros: Jesse Treviño's art captured the essence of San Antonio's West Side.

"He froze the moment for us," said Cisneros, whose connection to Treviño dates back to childhood."He froze 1955, 1960s, 1970s San Antonio, just froze it in place. And it’s the perfect remembrance of our parents, our cousins, our families, our friends, our experiences. It's all right there when you look at it."

"I grew up at 2906 Monterrey Street and he was at 2706 Monterrey, so our family lives intertwined because we shared the grocery store in between us," said Cisneros, who wrote about their shared experiences in his foreword to"Spirit: The Life and Art of Jesse Treviño," Anthony Head's biography of the artist.

"That was farther than most of us on the West Side went," Cisneros said."It was a fantastic experience for him, and he was clearly headed in a really national direction at that point." "For all the magnificence of his art, the thing that I have always admired most about Jesse was his ability to overcome," Cisneros said."He overcame a disability that would break most people. Instead, he adapted to it, and then produced globally significant art."The West Side has produced a number of notable artists, Cisneros said, including Porfirio Salinas, whose bluebonnet paintings were admired by Lyndon Johnson. Treviño carved a specific niche for himself.
