Adrian Purslow started his journalistic career as a junior at the Bacup Times and then rose through the ranks, including a spell working at the Rochdale Observer
Former editor of the Rossendale Free Press Adrian Purslow died in South Africa on May 28, aged 80. His funeral was held in the United Church, Hermanus, conducted by Pastor Bevan Sylvester, on Thursday, June 13.
Pastor Sylvester told the mourners that they were saluting a life well-lived and the legacy that Adrian left behind. His daughter Janine explained how while in South Africa he had assisted with the local newspaper as it was in his blood. Janine said: “He was kind, fair, straightforward, considerate, wise, always funny and smiling, quick-witted and sharp as a pin, generous to a fault as mum says and devoted to his family and to God. He was my everyday hero who I always adored and without whom I will be a little lost.”
“Their frankness is legend, but so, too, is their commitment and loyalty, a combination which has deserved far greater reward. If my life depended on it, I could not recall the last strike action; that, I think, speaks volumes about a people for whom I have the greatest respect and admiration.” “Then, in 2003, he warmly welcomed me back to the newspaper and trained me again; this time to become news editor and I learnt design skills I carry forward in my freelance work today. Firm, fair, determined, yes a powder keg at times, but on a personal level he also stood by me and was a great support.”
