All of this came as a bit of a surprise to the Rangers on Saturday. With good reason. Trevino was manager Chris Woodward’s most regular starter over the three years they were together. And Trevino’s offensive numbers in the majors — a .245/.270/.364/.634 slash line with the Rangers — seemed to closely follow his minor league line. That line: .259/.299/.390./.689.

“That’s tough for me to even hear,” Woodward said. “I felt like we gave José a tremendous opportunity here. I think the world of him. I think he’s a winner and a champion. And I’ve told him that many times. After the 2020 season, I pulled him aside and wanted him to lead our team. He got a chance to play every day, got a chance to get a ton of bats. And I always felt there was more in there offensively.

Trevino has put up numbers over the first three months of the season on track for career bests: .282/.336/.470/.806 in 128 plate appearances entering Saturday. He is tied for the lead among catchers with at least 100 innings of work in saving runs with pitch-framing. He’s got a strong chance of making the All-Star team.

But his chief competition might be Jonah Heim, whom the Rangers chose to keep over Trevino. The Rangers
