Former President Joe Biden is in Galveston, Texas on Thursday to participate in a Juneteenth Celebration Service at a historic Church.

The event is being held at the Reedy Chapel AME Church, which is notable for being a location where in order announcing the end of slavery in Texas was read on June 19, 1865. In 2021, the former president signed into law an order that made June 19 otherwise known as Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S. The bill, called the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, passed the House with overwhelming support and was approved by a unanimous vote in the Senate. At the time, Biden said that the day will serve as a “day in which we remember the moral stain, the terrible toll that slavery took on the country, and continues to take.”
