RESCUED: Former Newcastle United player Christian Atsu
According to reports more than 5,000 people have died after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit south-east Turkey and northern Syria during the early hours yesterday, followed by a second measuring 7.5. However according to reports Hatayspor sporting director Taner Savut is still in the collapsed building from which Atsu was rescued. Damage was particularly severe in Hatay because it was one of the regions closest to the earthquake’s epicentre.
The ex-Ghana forward, 31, played 107 games for Newcastle and has had spells with Chelsea, Everton and Bournemouth. He now plays for Hatayspor in the Turkish Super Lig whom he joined in September 2022 after a season with Saudi Arabian team Al-Raed.
