Ahmed A. Sh. Ahmed, 43, of Gahanna, pleaded guilty in federal court to wire fraud, submitting a false statement and making a false statement.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Gahanna man is facing up to 30 years in prison after he admitted to embezzling thousands of dollars from an Islamic center in Columbus while he was the center’s director.

Ahmed A. Sh. Ahmed, 43, pleaded guilty in federal court to wire fraud, submitting a false statement and making a false statement, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio. Wire fraud is punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Making and submitting false claims each have a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

Authorities say that while Ahmed was director of the Ibn Taymiyah Masjid and Islamic Center from 2009 to 2019, he wrote unauthorized checks for himself adding up to nearly $50,000. He reportedly wrote the checks between 2015 and 2018, gradually increasing the amounts he took from the center.Ahmed also reportedly submitted false claims to the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority’s housing choice voucher program from 2014 through 2020.
