Former NFL player Cameron Sutton turned himself in to law enforcement on domestic battery charges.
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — Former NFL cornerback Cameron Sutton turned himself in at the Orient Road Jail in Hillsborough County Sunday night, ending a weekslong search.
Sutton, 29, who previously played for the Detroit Lions, was wanted for domestic battery by strangulation.Sutton's attorney told HCSO on March 25 that Sutton planned to turn himself in. “After weeks of evading law enforcement, this man has finally made the right choice to turn himself in,” Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said.
The domestic battery charge stems from an early morning incident at a home in Lutz on March 7, where the sheriff's office responded to a call about domestic violence in progress involving Sutton and a woman.Detroit signed Sutton to a $33 million, three-year contract a year ago. He helped the franchise win a division title for the first time in three decades along with two playoff games in one postseason for the first time since 1957.
He started in all 17 regular season games, making a career-high 65 tackles and one interception, and in each of Detroit’s three playoff games.Domestic battery by strangulation is a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
