Former NFL player and Texas state representative Scott Turner is set to face questions from senators today as he seeks to become Donald Trump 's Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Turner, who led the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council during Trump's first term, will appear before the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee for a hearing scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. central time. Turner's journey is one of diverse experiences.
He is a professional mentor, pastor, and former Texas House member. Raised in the Dallas area, he attended Pearce High School in Richardson before playing football at the University of Illinois. His NFL career spanned several years, with stints on the Washington Redskins, San Diego Chargers, and Denver Broncos. During his offseasons, he served as an intern for then-Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., later transitioning to a full-time role after retiring from football in 2004. After his football career concluded, Turner entered politics, running unsuccessfully for California's 50th Congressional District in 2006. He then successfully campaigned for Texas House Representative for the newly created 33rd District, serving two terms from 2013 to 2017. This district encompasses part of Collin County and all of Rockwall County. In 2019, President Trump appointed Turner as the director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council. Following his 2024 election victory, Trump nominated Turner for the position of Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Turner is also listed as an associate pastor at Prestonwood Baptist Church. The HUD department is responsible for addressing the nation's housing needs, ensuring fair housing laws are upheld, and overseeing housing programs for the most vulnerable Americans
