FILE - Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., answers a question during a debate with New York Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, as they face off during a New York governor primary debate at the studios of WNBC4-TV, Thursday June 16, 2022, in New York. Suozzi is launching a campaign, Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2023, to retake the New York congressional seat held by Rep. George Santos as the besieged Republican congressman faces criminal charges on money laundering and lying to Congress.

The Democrat announced the congressional bid in a statement on X, formally known as Twitter, and said a formal campaign kickoff will come after local elections next month. “Today I’m filing a committee to run for Congress in November 2024,” he said. “The madness in Washington, D.C., and the absurdity of George Santos remaining in the United States Congress is obvious to everyone.”Santos misses extended deadline to file financial disclosure, blames fear of a ‘rushed job’A handful of candidates have emerged to vie for the seat in what is expected to be part of a group of competitive congressional races in New York that could determine party control of the House.

After his election, news outlets revealed that Santos had fabricated large parts of his background, including making up stories about where he went to college and where he worked, telling people he was a Wall Street dealmaker with a real estate portfolio when he was actually struggling financially and had faced eviction from multiple apartments. Santos also lied about his heritage, saying he was Jewish when he wasn’t.
