Former Mets minor league suffers heart attack in Mexico, dead at 31: reports
According to reports, Pobereyko, who had been pitching in the Mexican and Dominican Leagues this winter, suffered a heart attack.
One of his former teams, the Sioux City Explorers, shared a photo on Twitter and wrote, “We mourn the loss of Matt Poebereyko. A great baseball player and an even better person. RIP POBO.” The 6-foot-3, 220-pound right-hander was a native of Hammond, Indiana who played at Kentucky Wesleyan. He began his pro career in Independent ball before working his way into a minor league deal with the Mets. He was a Florida State League All-Star in 2018 and made his way up to AA ball in 2021.
