The former Marymount California University, on the Peninsula is now owned by UCLA. Banners around campus boast its new name — UCLA South Bay.
, just six months after the college signed an agreement to merge with Saint Leo University, a larger Catholic campus in Central Florida. At the time, officials from both colleges touted the merger as mutually beneficial.
But when regulatory hurdles extended the timeframe on the merger, the two universities parted ways and MCU had no choice but to close, university officials said at the time. The last day for MCU’s 500 students and 140 employees was Aug. 31. Buying MCU’s 35-acres, including dormitories nearby in San Pedro, was the largest acquisition in UCLA’s more than century-long history, Bruins officials said previously. The South Bay campus will allow UCLA to expand enrollment while also tackling student crowding. The campus can accommodate nearly 1,000 students while the dorms, called the UCLA South Bay Villas, can house 400.
“We’re glad that they got the place,” Ferraro said, “instead of a developer who wanted to put more homes in there.” Marymount has been an educational institution forever, she added, and was a good place for locals to attend a college close by.Marymount, which was founded in RPV in 1968 but had roots dating to the 1930s, had been a small liberal arts college throughout its history. It offered an associate degree, nine bachelor’s degrees and a master of business administration degree.
