Closed since 2013, the city's former Central Library reopened this week as a temporary shelter.
A long-sought goal of finding a new use for the city of San Diego’s former Central Library became a reality this week as it reopened as a temporary shelter for homeless women.
“This has not been an easy road,” Gloria said, recalling that he had mentioned wanting to use the old library as a homeless shelter in his 2022 state of the city address.on the property would allow it to be used for anything other than a library. A Superior Court judge dismissed the restriction in December.
Cathryn Nacario, CEO of NAMI of San Diego and Imperial counties, said women staying in the shelter would be offered more than just a bed. They also would have access to behavioral health services and health care as well as showers, laundry services and a mail stop.
