KIPP alums started their own school, and then the pandemic hit. Here's what they're up to now.

A few years ago, chatter began to ripple through the KIPP alumni network about possibly starting their own school. It coincided with the February 2018 firing of KIPP co-founder Mike Feinberg, who faced allegations sexually abuse of a student in Houston in 1999, after a two decades of building the pre-eminent charter school network.
There were four awarded in 2019, drastically down from the peak of 109 awarded in 1998 after KIPP took off, according to Texas Education Agency data. “What happens is we get a lot of kids that come from our public schools who have not had as intense intervention when it comes to academics,” Claudia Cardenas, the upper school campus director, Westchase Neighborhood School said. “There are a lot of kids that come that have never passed STAAR.”Cardenas noticed science was an area that seemed to be particularly weighing scores down for her campus. Only about 40 percent of students were approaching or meeting grade level in the subject.
