May marks the 30th anniversary of the execution of serial killer John Wayne Gacy, known as the Killer Clown.

FILE - This 1978 file photo shows serial killer John Wayne Gacy , who was convicted of killing 33 young men and boys in the Chicago area in the 1970s and executed in 1994. More than 40 years after a collection of decaying bodies was found beneath Gacy's house, authorities announced Monday, Oct. 25, 2021, that they have identified the remains of one more of his victims. He is one of the most prolific serial killer s in U.S.

“Well, the crimes were committed when I was in high school, so it had been 14 years Gacy had been sentenced to death,” she said. “I’m now a lawyer for just a few years and we get the call that Gacy wanted a First Amendment lawyer, because he had some civil matters that he had been sued on but we had no intention of representing him in those kinds of things.”

Conti reflects on meeting Gacy saying she did not feel evilness in his presence and that he was a normal guy. “He was affable, he was glib, he was engaging and he was intelligent. That’s how he got away with it,” she said. “I was very curious. When you grew up in Chicago, John Wayne Gacy is the boogeyman. He is a household word and I wanted to go down to death row and I wanted to look at the epitome of evil,” Conti said. “After meeting him and after being on death row, we decided to take on his death penalty appeals at the very end.”
