The review will determine if criminal charges should be filed against the former lieutenant.

A former Iron County Sheriff's Office lieutenant accused of fostering a toxic work environment and committing acts of misconduct is now under review by an independent special counsel. Jeff Humphries, promoted to lieutenant in 2021, resigned on Dec. 3, 2024. His resignation came just hours before a determination hearing that found all allegations against him substantiated. These allegations include lurid sexual comments, threatening language, physical assault, and abuse of power.

Sheriff's office officials confirmed he had been placed on administrative leave for more than six weeks pending the outcome of an internal investigation. Piute County Attorney Scott Burns, a seasoned prosecutor with decades of experience, has been appointed by Iron County Attorney Chad Dotson to review the findings of the State Bureau of Investigation and determine whether criminal charges should be filed against Humphries. Burns previously served as Iron County Attorney from 1989-2001 and deputy director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy under former President George W. Bush
