Staff Reports Former Headland standout and current Vanderbilt pitcher Bryce Cunningham earned the Southeastern Conference’s Pitcher of the Week honor this week.
Cunningham, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound junior right-handed pitcher at Vandy who graduated from Headland in 2022, earned the honor after a complete game one-hit shutout and 12 strikeouts in last Friday’s game against Missouri. His performance helped the Commodores earn a 3-1 win. Cunningham allowed just three baserunners over the seven innings on way to his fourth win of the season. The 12 strikeouts led all SEC pitchers on the week.
The outing continued a strong season for the former Headland star. He improved his record to 4-1 and lowered his earned run average to a team-leading 2.87, which is also tied for 10th best in the SEC through Monday’s action. Cunningham also has a co-team high 57 strikeouts, which is also third overall in the conference.
People are also reading… Opponents are batting only .181 against Cunningham, which ranks ninth in the league, as he has allowed only 25 hits in 37 2/3 innings. The 25 hits allowed is the 10th fewest in the conference, while the inning total ties for fifth most.With Cunningham’s help, Vanderbilt is 23-6 overall and ranked sixth nationally by Baseball America.
