Rivers went on to become an All-American at Moberly Junior College and an All-Conference Guard at Missouri Western University, before moving on to a 16-year career as both a player and a coach for the Harlem Globetrotters from 1973-1986.
Former Harlem Globetrotter and Chatham County Commission District 2 Commissioner Larry "Gator" Rivers died Saturday morning, according to Chatham County Chairman Chester Ellis.Ellis confirmed Rivers had been battling cancer, which he said was the cause of Rivers' death and the reason for his recent absences from county commission meetings.
In 1967, Rivers was a role player for the Russell Ellington-coached Beach Bulldogs, a team that went on to become the first integrated team to win a state championship in the Georgia High School Association. "Commissioner Rivers was a basketball legend and volunteered a lot of his time to the Frank Callen Boys and Girls Club where he inspired our youth to be involved in sports.
