A court finds former Fiji prime minister Frank Bainimarama guilty of perverting the course of justice, ordering he face sentencing later this month for interfering in police investigations.

A court has found former Fiji prime minister Frank Bainimarama guilty of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The justice sent the case back to the lower court for sentencing on March 28, after convicting Bainimarama and Qiliho on the charges. He found they were guilty of directing Fijian police to halt investigations into financial mismanagement at the University of the South Pacific in 2019. Bainimarama and Qiliho both pleaded not guilty and escaped conviction last year in the magistrates court when it ruled there was insufficient evidence to convict them.

After a trial receiving evidence from 25 witnesses for the prosecution, magistrate Seini Puamau found in a strongly-worded judgement that the evidence did not prove the charges. The magistrates court is expected to hear submissions from Bainimarama and Qiliho's lawyers on March 20 before sentencing.
