Australian law firm JGA Saddler filed the landmark lawsuits, which alleges women working for the companies were subject to abuse, rape and harrassment at mining sites.
A class action lawsuit has been filed against mining giants BHP and Rio Tinto on behalf of thousands of female workers.
"These class actions will give a voice to these women, many of whom have been too afraid to speak out for fear of losing their jobs or of workplace reprisals." "Having heard some of the most harrowing reports of harassment and intimidation that some women face on mining sites, I wouldn't be recommending any women enter into the industry until these global companies genuinely make women's personal safety a priority," Aylward added.JGA lawyer Joshua Aylward said he expects thousands of women to join the lawsuit.
"I was so shocked. They were accusing me of giving out sexual favours to rort the company via the employee awards system, which was a joke because the prizes were things like a thank you card or a $10 Bunnings voucher," she said. "This extends to our entire network, including business partners, contractors, and suppliers. We are absolutely committed to creating safe, respectful, and inclusive workplaces.
