Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, the former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party ( DUP), is to appeal his conviction for a series of child sex offences. The 63‑year‑old was found guilty by a jury at Newry Crown Court last month on all 18 charges, which included one count of rape, 13 counts of indecent assault and four counts of gross indecency.
The offences were committed against two women when they were children over a 23‑year period. One victim, referred to as Complainant A, was in primary school when Donaldson kissed her, put his tongue in her mouth and put his hands up her top. The second victim, Complainant B, also in primary school at the time, was raped by Donaldson on multiple occasions, including once in front of his wife.
The trial heard that Donaldson's wife, Lady Eleanor Donaldson, aided and abetted the abuse by turning a blind eye despite witnessing some incidents. She was found to have committed those acts but was too ill to stand trial. Donaldson, who was the longest‑serving Northern Ireland MP after first being elected in 1997, was arrested in March 2024. He denied the allegations, calling them 'unbelievable' and 'simply not true'.
He is currently held at Maghaberry Prison awaiting sentencing. On Friday, his solicitor John McBurney confirmed that appeal papers had been lodged. The appeal is expected to be heard at the Royal Courts of Justice in Belfast in the autumn and seeks to have the convictions set aside. The scandal has triggered several independent reviews.
The DUP, which Donaldson led until he stepped down after the charges were laid, has commissioned a 'focused, independent review' led by Jim Gamble, a former senior police officer and head of the INEQE Safeguarding Group, to establish what the party knew about his conduct. The Northern Ireland Assembly has also begun a review into alleged abuse or inappropriate behaviour linked to Donaldson during his time as an MLA from 2003 to 2010.
Earlier this month, Donaldson was removed from the Privy Council after he requested his name be taken off the list of senior advisers to the King. His removal from the prestigious body marked a further fall from grace for a politician who was once a heavyweight in unionist politics. The case has sent shockwaves through Northern Ireland's political landscape, raising questions about how the abuse could have persisted for so long without intervention.
Victims' advocacy groups have called for a thorough investigation into the failures that allowed the abuse to continue. The appeal process will focus on legal grounds, potentially challenging the evidence or procedural aspects of the trial.
