Former Dodgers MVP invokes Giants fans as he enters Calif. Senate race

Los Angeles Dodgers MVP Steve Garvey invoked San Francisco Giants fans in an interview announcing his run for the Senate seat formerly held by Dianne Feinstein.

Former Los Angeles Dodgers MVP Steve Garvey announced his candidacy for the California Senate seat previously held by Dianne Feinstein on Tuesday — and he did his best to shout out San Francisco Giants fans in the process.

Garvey, 74, has plenty of name recognition from his nearly two decades playing for the Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. He’s also a Republican in a state that voted for Bernie Sanders in the 2020 Democratic primary, for Joe Biden over Donald Trump in the 2020 general by a nearly 30-point margin, and then rejected a recall effort against Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom by a final tally of 62% to 38%. Point being: calling Garvey an underdog in the Senate race would be putting it kindly. His best hope is that by virtue of California’s open primary process in March, the other high-profile Democrats who’ve declared their candidacies — Reps. Adam Schiff, Katie Porter and Barbara Lee, and possibly recent Senate appointee Laphonza Butler if she runs for a full term — all cannibalize their voter base, allowing Garvey to finish in the top two and advance to the general election. As an early olive branch effort, Garvey joked to Politico that he was inspired to run for office because he’s gotten positive feedback from Giants fans, of all people. “When I started having people come up and say, ‘You know, I’m a Giants fan and I hate the Dodgers, but I’ll vote for you,’ I said, ‘Well, I guess that’s enough,’” he told Politico. Garvey’s announcement video is heavy on baseball references and MLB footage from his 19-year career, and attempts to paint him as an apolitical moderate. “I never played for Democrats or Republicans or independents. I played for all of you,” Garvey said in the video. “Now I’m running for U.S. Senate in California, a state that I believe at one time was the heartbeat of America, and now is just a murmur.” Garvey’s campaign website is currently devoid of policy prescriptions. The “Steve’s Vision” section of the site lists education, quality of life, public safety, national security, homelessness and small business as the tent-pole issues of his campaign, but there aren’t many specific solutions offered to address those issues. If he wants to be taken seriously, Garvey will also have to raise money, and fast; his Democratic opponents, especially Schiff, have already amassed tens of millions of dollars for their campaigns.
