Recently, the wait for a nod to the future of Doctor Who ended, as Kate Phillips, chief content officer at the BBC, confirmed that the sci-fi show"was going nowhere." After months of speculation, the confirmation that the show would one day return left millions of Whovians breathing a sigh of relief, as it seemed that the failed Disney partnership might've jeopardized the series' existence entirely.
Next on the agenda for inquisitive fans is to find out exactly when the show will return, and a former showrunner has given them their first hint. Speaking in an interview, Steven Moffat, the series showrunner during the Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi eras, spoke candidly about his wishes for Doctor Who's future, first saying,"I don't have any inside information and I'm only vaguely in touch with Russell and we're usually talking about the fact we're both working for Channel 4 at the moment. I don't know what the future is. I hope there is one. I have no idea." Moffat then gave his expert insight into how the process might proceed, suggesting that an answer as to when Doctor Who will return might not arrive until the debut of the upcoming spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea. Moffat said: "The spin-off's been shot and I imagine decisions don't get taken until that's gone out, and that's not for a while. But it's always painful when it's off the air. I think there's a national duty for the BBC to make Doctor Who." When is 'The War Between the Land and the Sea' Coming Out? So, Moffat seems to think that the specifics of Doctor Who's future will arrive following the debut of The War Between the Land and the Sea. With that in mind, when exactly will the spin-off arrive? Sadly, this is also relatively unknown, although recently, it was finally confirmed that it will air sometime in 2026. So it seems Whovians still have plenty of waiting to do, although at least there is an enticing new Who-related series to pass the time. The synopsis for The War Between the Land and the Sea reads,"When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT step into action as the land and sea wage war."
