Incumbent Clayton Perry, who got probation for drunken driving and hit-and-run cases, doesn't seem to have hard feelings toward District 10 frontrunner Marc Whyte, though Perry was slow to publicly support Whyte.
Though Marc Whyte is one of seven candidates running for the open District 10 seat this election season, it hardly seems like a fight.Though he understands that a race this crowded is typically a recipe for a runoff, he’s gunning to win outright next month. He’ll need to win more than half the votes to do so.
But none of them have matched the support behind the business attorney — at least when it comes cto endorsement from Republican elected officials and the support of business people. The idea that Whyte would be Perry’s successor has been floating around since Perry identified him as a possible successor in District 10 in 2019.and lined up behind Whyte.
Whyte has served on San Antonio’s Ethics Review Board, the city’s bond committee and the Port San Antonio board. He had been a zoning commissioner since 2019 but stepped down to run for City Council. And for years, Whyte has been involved with the Northeast Neighborhood Alliance, a group of more than 80 associations focused on streets, drainage, public safety and other community issues. So it’s no surprise that Whyte looked like he was among friends at the alliance’s candidates forum this week.
“There’s been too many 10 to 1 votes,” Whyte said. “And I think that where I’m going to be different is I’m going to really try to work to find six votes for a lot of the things that I want to do.”Though often thought of as conservative, the district’s voter base may be more left-leaning than many realize. More progressive candidates have given conservatives a run for their money in recent years.
