Former Democratic Arizona secretary of state calls on Katie Hobbs to recuse

Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, the state's Democratic nominee for governor, is facing calls from some of her predecessors, including one who was a Democrat, to recuse herself from election duties for the midterm elections.

Former Arizona Secretaries of State Richard Mahoney, who served as a Democrat in that role, and Ken Bennett made the pleas in interviews with Time magazine."I think it would be wise if the secretary of state seconded responsibility for ministerial oversight to either the attorney general or the Maricopa County recorder," Mahoney said to the outlet.

Bennett stated that Hobbs should"let a deputy secretary or somebody else" oversee election procedures. Hobbs's opponent in the gubernatorial race, former television news anchor Kari Lake , has called on Hobbs to recuse herself multiple times throughout the campaign and reiterated that stance again Thursday.Hobbs is vying to be the first Democrat to be elected governor of the Grand Canyon State since Janet Napolitano won reelection in 2006.Lake leads Hobbs in the RealClearPolitics polling average by 1.8 percentage points in the"toss-up" gubernatorial race.
