Police say they are keeping ‘an open mind’ and the investigation into the exact circumstances of the incident is ongoing

The former daughter-in-law of a Victorian couple who died from suspected mushroom poisoning hosted the lunch that has sparked a homicide investigation.

A 66-year-old Korumburra woman died in hospital on Friday, while her 68-year-old husband – a Baptist pastor – was in a critical condition at the Austin hospital in Melbourne. The woman’s 70-year-old sister and brother-in-law, also from Korumburra, died on Friday and Saturday respectively. Det Ins Dean Thomas, of the homicide squad, on Monday revealed the woman was the former daughter-in-law of one of the couples.Thomas said the people who died presented with symptoms consistent with eating death cap mushrooms.“She hasn’t presented with any symptoms but we have to keep an open mind in relation to this, that it could be very innocent. But we just don’t know at this point.”He said items have been seized from the home and they will be forensically tested.
